Why Comparing Your Journey to Others Steals Our Peace

Why Comparing Our Journey to Others Steals Our Peace

Have you ever scrolled through social media and felt like everyone else is ahead of you? I know I have. Why do we keep comparing our journey to others when everyone’s journey is different?

Sometimes, I catch myself comparing my journey to others, and I pause. I ask myself, why am I doing this? Comparison is natural, but it can easily steal our peace if we aren’t aware of it. I reflected on this idea more deeply in one of my previous posts about slowing down and trusting our own process.

Comparison Is More Common Than We Think

Comparing ourselves to others is something most of us do without even realizing it. But when it happens, it’s easy to forget our own blessings.

But the truth is, it’s something we shouldn’t do. When comparing your journey to others, it’s easy to forget your own blessings.

When you compare your journey and your efforts to someone else’s—someone with a completely different situation—you are being unjust. You’re being unjust to both yourself and them. No Two Journeys Are the Same

No one has the exact same life as you.
No one has the same path.
No one has the same struggles.
No one has the same family, friends, experiences, or opportunities.

Everyone’s life, situation, and experiences are different.

So how could it make sense to compare your journey, your efforts, or your progress to someone else’s?

Allah Created Us Uniquely

Allah created each of us uniquely. He gave us different abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Each of us has areas where we excel and areas where we struggle—and that’s okay.

That’s how we learn.
That’s how we grow.
That’s how we relate to others.

The Struggles We Don’t See

Something we must always remember is that everyone has unseen struggles. When you compare yourself to someone, and you only see them from your perspective, you might be shocked at how many struggles they carry—sometimes even more than your own.

The outside world, including social media, never shows the full picture. That colleague at work who is always smiling, you do not see everything.

This is something we need to remind ourselves of constantly.

Returning to Your Own Path

Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, is the Most Just.

He knows:

  • your private wounds
  • your silent efforts
  • your hidden sacrifices
  • your exact circumstances

He will never compare you to someone who had a different life, a different test, a different starting point.

Allah is Al-‘Adl, the Most Just, and He is never unfair to His servants. It would be unfair to believe otherwise.

It’s normal to compare ourselves sometimes, but it’s about awareness. When you notice these thoughts, pause.

Remember Allah’s justice.

Return to your own path.
Focus on yourself.
Only on yourself.

May Allah grant us awareness of our own path and contentment with the blessings He has given us.

With love and dua,
Sara 🤍
